Tap the base of the tree or rock you want to clear. This opens a small menu showing which tool is required and how many you need. If you have enough, you can tap the tool icon to remove it. Trees only respond to axes, and rocks only respond to pickaxes. If the menu does not appear, try tapping directly at the bottom of the obstacle. Once cleared, the tools are consumed and the space becomes available to use.
